Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Visiting Student Program

Contents

Synopsis

The Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Visiting Student Program is based on the Great Plains Network Visiting Scholar Program, modified to meet the needs of the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Group. It enables doctoral-level students at participating Great Plains Network (GPN) universities and international affiliate universities to take advantage of educational opportunities – such as specialized courses, unique computational facilities, unusual laboratories -at other GPN universities and international affiliates.

The Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Visiting Student Program vision is to facilitate study for up to two semesters or three quarters at another GPN of international affiliate campus.

Eligibility and Conditions

Eligibility Criteria

A doctoral-level student who wishes to become a Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Visiting Student must first consult with his or her adviser, who will determine whether the off-campus opportunity is likely to enhance the student's education.

Conditions of Enrollment

Vision: while details concerning tuition, course transferability, and so on are currently negotiated between at student’s current university and the university that they visit on a case by case basis, the following guidelines form a recommended template.

Visiting students register at both institutions. They pay tuition at the host institution, but the course(s) they take there should be pre-approved by their home institution for transfer credit, prior to traveling to the host institution. Visiting students should have a visiting student program co-advisor at the institution they visit, who will help the student both intellectually and with bureaucracy at the host institution. Host universities provide access to libraries, laboratories, recreational facilities, housing, etc., on the same basis as they are made available to resident graduate students. Visiting Students may be assessed fees for certain services or benefits. Visiting Students may be required to secure their own health and medical coverage. Check with your co-advisor at the host institution for suggestions about how to find out more about the requirements of the host institution.

Admission and Application Procedures

A doctoral-level student who wishes to become a Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Visiting Student should start by reading this document. Then s/he should consult with his or her adviser, who will determine whether the off-campus opportunity is likely to enhance the student's education.

The adviser will discuss the proposed visit with a colleague at the host university who would be willing to serve as the host institution’s visiting student program co-advisor for that student. Both faculty members should agree that the student is qualified to take advantage of the visit before applying. The student should be prepared to suggest a host institution visiting student program co-advisor to his/her advisor.

Applying

Your application must be completed early enough to have all approvals completed before the start of classes at the host university. Prospective visiting students should begin this process as early as possible because as a general rule, bureaucracies take time to do their work.

Application Approval Process: Home Campus

After filling out an application, get it approved by the Faculty Adviser identified on the application. If the Faculty Adviser approves the application, then get it approved by the head of your department. If the department head approves, the application should then be sent to the student’s host institution visiting student program co-advisor.

Application Approval Process: Host Campus

Once the Faculty Adviser and his/her department chair have approved the application, submit it to the student’s host institution visiting student program co-advisor. That person will endeavor to obtain approval for the application at the host campus.

Application Acceptance/Denial

The host institution visiting student program co-advisor will notify the student of his or her acceptance as a Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Visiting Student. The student is asked to make inquiries every 1-2 weeks or so as needed to ensure that action is taken in a timely manner on the application.

If a student's application is not approved, this may be because a student does not meet the requirements of the program or that the Host university has too many of its own students who are interested in that particular course.
