Celebrate China Series Grades K-12

Celebrate the geography of China, experience the Lunar New Year, and get ready for Mid-Autumn Day. Students will learn basic Chinese greetings and courtesies. Students will also identify common words, as well as culturally appropriate customs and behaviors.

Program 1 - Welcome to China:

Students will learn basic Chinese greetings and courtesies; using maps students will explore the diversity of the country and the misconceptions about a culture different from their own. Students will greet one another in Chinese and write simple characters.

Program 2 - Lunar New Year:

The Chinese New Year is the most colorful and important of China’s festivals. The New Year may occur as early as January 21, and as late as February 21. Students will identify the importance of celebrating the New Year. They will also understand traditions and rituals, including paper cutting, special decorations, foods, and activities. The Lantern Festival concludes the New Year celebration. Students will learn the traditional meaning of lanterns in Chinese culture.

Program 3 - Mid-Autumn Day:

Mid Autumn Day is the second largest festival in China. Families gather to celebrate the abundance of the summer harvest; together they share traditional moon cakes as they reflect upon legends of the Moon Goddess. The program introduces different ways of celebrating such as carrying lighted lanterns and performing the dragon dance. Students will learn a Chinese poem.
