Bill Mitchell, Executive Director

From 1990 to 2009, Bill Mitchell served as Executive Director of MOREnet (Missouri Research & Education Network), Missouri’s state education network. MOREnet is part of the University of Missouri System and provides Internet connectivity, training and technical support to the state’s K-12 schools, colleges and universities, libraries, state government and community information networks. In 1999, he also assumed the responsibilities of Associate Vice President, Telecommunications, for the University of Missouri System. Mitchell was responsible for the initial planning, funding and implementation of MOREnet, which was Missouri’s first collaborative information technology initiative. Mitchell has overseen the growth of MOREnet from four part-time employees to 150 full-time positions and from 13 to over 1,100 customer connections, including nearly all the state’s colleges and universities, K-12 schools and libraries. In 2001, MOREnet was among the first five state education networks in the nation to be connected to the Internet2 (I2) high performance network. Soon after, Mitchell was selected by I2 to lead a national initiative to extend advanced Internet capabilities to the broader education community including K-12 schools, community colleges, museums and libraries. The I2 K20 Initiative will leverage advanced networking capabilities by facilitating innovation opportunities through content, services and application efforts. Mitchell has been with the University of Missouri since 1977 and held executive positions in both administrative and academic information technology. He also has held technology-related positions in education and retail in Colorado. Mitchell has a B.S. in Statistics and an M.B.A. from the University of Colorado. Involved in numerous technology and education associations, he is a past board member for the Seminars on Academic Computing, past board member and chair of FARNET (Federation of American Research Networks), and is the university’s executive liaison to the national Internet2 initiative. Mitchell was a member of the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education (CBHE) Telecommunications Advisory Group and currently serves on CBHE’s Committee on Technology and Instruction. He was recently recognized for his contributions to the library community by being named to the American Library Association’s National Advocacy Honor Roll.
