Rep council meeting, Jan 26, 2011

Kate Adams, Greg Monaco, Brien Waage, Warren Wilson, Del Johnson

UM System president stepping down and has to be replaced. This process will take about a year to complete.

A brief update on the ILMS grant, KU is submitting agency. There are many libraries involved.

Three states have elected members of CI program: Ron Roeber from Nebraska, Gordon Springer from Missouri, and Jim Davis from Iowa State. SD hasn't submitted a nominee yet.

Annual meeting is in June. Dave Lambert from I2 might speak, Joe Mambretti from International Center for Advanced Internet Research is another possible speaker.

Feelers for a community college/ technical colleges / non PhD granting institutions group have been sent out.

Question: Is this a focus for the annual meeting? Focus for membership?

Answer: While these schools are not a focus for membership, they pass traffic on GPN. They have concerns and may be able to help each other. GPN can facilitate this. On occasion, there is a reason to contact a tech there for grants. Every time this happens, it takes a while to get reacquainted.

Broadband funding for community colleges and other anchor institutions has been a common theme lately. There have been several recent grants to fund this.

Brien: Caught up in financial and HR issues. It will take about a year to replace the UM System president. The state budget is getting cut by 8-10% (tentatively). IBM is creating a data and service center in Columbia. They are hiring 300 people. They are paying 30% to 50% more than the university, so people from the university are leaving. The current governor was trying to keep budget flat, but MU is still tightening their belt.

SD: Legislature is laying low. Governor proposed 10% across the board cut for education and Medicaid service providers, which they are still discussing. SD has constitutional requirement for a balanced budget. It is hard to raise taxes, too. DUESEL has funding through the end of the calendar year, but it's unknown beyond that.

Warren: new science building is opening in Feb. Who will manage the lab? Whoever funds it will manage it.

KS has a new governor. He is more fiscally conservative. There is a 7% cut in salaries being proposed. There have been cutbacks of 5% at KSU.
