Greensburg Highschool

What's left of Greensburg Highschool after tornados ripped through the town in May 2007.

On March 11, the GPN K20 Initiative, in coordination with the Kansas Association for Interactive Distance Education (KAIDE) organization, hosted a series of Interactive Distance Learning (IDL) sessions, streamed from Greensburg, Kansas, the site of a tornado disaster that destroyed most of the town in May 2007.

The event was a success, with 86 connections from the states of Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin.

One-hour programs, titled “Lessons from Greensburg, Kansas,” were scheduled for elementary, middle and high school students. In addition to interactive participation, there were nearly 50 live streams going to other locations around the GPN region and the nation.

2007

Visit to an Ice-Age Cave on November 7, 2007

A virtual tour of Riverbluff Cave – at nearly 1 million years old, it is one of the oldest caves in North America. This preserved ice-age environment is so fragile that only a few highly trained scientists are allowed to enter. One of these scientists, Matt Forir, the cave’s lead paleontologist, will host this virtual tour to allow students a unique glimpse into prehistoric life. Students will observe stunning cave formations and artifacts such as a bear bed, animal tracks and fossils, plus they’ll be able to interact with Matt, learning real-world applications for the research and discoveries in the cave.
