Information and Eligibility
The Visiting Scholar Program enables doctoral-level students at any GPN university to take advantage of educational opportunities--specialized courses, unique computational facilities, unusual laboratories--at any other GPN university without change in registration or increase in tuition. The focus of this program is the integration of computer science with other domain sciences. Example areas of emphasis might include
- Informatics (e.g., bioinformatics)
- Computation (e.g., computational chemistry)
- High performance physics
- Advanced visualization (e.g., hydrology, weather, meteorology)
- Data mining (e.g., medical data)
Please keep in mind that new areas are emerging and applications that unite new fields of study with computer science, computation and/or advanced networking are encouraged.
Eligibility Criteria
A doctoral-level student who wishes to become a GPN Visiting Scholar must first consult with his or her adviser, who will determine whether the off-campus opportunity is likely to enhance the student's education and ascertain that it is not, in fact, available on the home campus.
Conditions of Enrollment
- Visiting Scholars remain registered at their home universities, paying the regular fees charged when they are in residence.
- Visiting Scholars must be registered at both institutions. You are not billed by the host institution for registration or tuition fees; however, you must provide evidence of tuition paid at your home university.
- Host universities provide access to libraries, laboratories, recreational facilities, housing, etc., on the same basis as they are made available to resident graduate students. Visiting Scholars may be assessed fees for certain services or benefits.
- Visiting Scholars may be required to secure their own health and medical coverage. Check with your Visiting Scholar contact for information specific to your host institution.
- Credit earned by Visiting Scholars is accepted by the home university for the equivalent level credit (undergraduate or graduate) upon receipt of grade reports or transcripts from the host university. Credit toward a degree, however, will be at the discretion of the home university or home department.
- Visits of Visiting Scholars may not exceed two semesters or three quarters regardless of the number of courses taken.
Admission and Application Procedures
A doctoral-level student who wishes to become a GPN Visiting Scholar should start by reading the 'Visiting Scholar Information and Eligibility' document. Then s/he must consult with his or her adviser, who will determine whether the off-campus opportunity is likely to enhance the student's education and ascertain that it is not, in fact, available on the home campus. The Adviser will discuss the proposed visit with a colleague at the host university; both faculty members should agree that the student is qualified to take advantage of the visit before you submit your application.
Submitting Your Application
Your application must be completed at least six weeks before the start of classes at the host university. Applications arriving after the deadline may not be accepted by the host university. Consult the Current Academic Year Calendars for term beginning and ending dates of GPN institutions.
The Visiting Scholar application process is entirely online:
- Each student creates their own log-in username and password. Your log-in should be your email address. We encourage you to provide an email address that is current and is most likely to remain active until your Visiting Scholar course has been completed.
- Please take your time completing this application. You may return to complete the application over a 30 day period. Please just enter your username and password in the 'Returning Users' section. Also, to save your data after each visit just press the 'Submit' button. Only press the 'Finalize' button when you are sure that you have completed the entire application. It will prompt you if any of the required fields are missing.
- If you choose to apply for one semester at Kansas State and the second semester at the University of Missouri you must complete two separate applications. After completing your first application, it will ask you if you would like to start a second application. You may only have one active (ie. non-finalized) application at a time. If you decide later on to complete a second application, then please just apply as a 'New User' using the same log-in information.
- If you decide to 'Withdraw' your application before you press 'Finalize' that is fine. Your application will automatically be terminated. If you decide to 'Withdraw' after you have 'Finalized' your application then your 'Request to Withdraw' is electronically sent to your home Visiting Scholar Contact to assist with your withdrawal as your application is now in the processing chain. You will receive an email once the application has been officially 'Withdrawn' from consideration and terminated.
Once you have 'Finalized' your application you may check upon its status by logging in as a 'Returning User'. This will allow you see where the application is in the processing chain. Once it is has been received by the Host Visiting Scholar Contact, your application will remain in 'Application Being Considered' status until a final decision is made. This could take several weeks so please do not worry.
Application Approval Process: Home Campus
After you have 'Finalized' your Visiting Scholar Application, a 'Request for Approval' is automatically forwarded to your Faculty Adviser whom you identified on your application. So please do discuss your interest in and eligibility for the Visiting Scholar Program with your Faculty Adviser before applying so that way they are not surprised by the electronic 'Request for Approval'.
If your Faculty Adviser approves your application, then a 'Request for Approval' is electronically forwarded to the Head of your Department. If the Head of Department, approves your application as well then your application is electronically submitted to the Visiting Scholar Contact on your home campus. Please note that each campus' Visiting Scholar Contact handles the day-to-day administrative functions of the program while the Visiting Scholar Liaison handles the academic policy of the program.
Application Approval Process: Host Campus
If the home campus Visiting Scholar Liaison (in conjunction with the home campus Visiting Scholar Contact) approves your application, the Visiting Scholar Contact will send the approved application electronically to the host campus Visiting Scholar Contact and Liaison for their consideration.
The Host Visiting Scholar Liaison and the Host Faculty Adviser and Host Head of Department must all approve your application.
All these remaining approvals are sought out by the host campus Visiting Scholar Contact. The Host Campus Visiting Scholar Contact notifies the student of his or her acceptance as a GPN Visiting Scholar, and then both campus Visiting Scholar Contacts provide information regarding cross-registration procedures to the student via email or post.
Application Notification
If a student's application is not approved at any point in the process, they will be notified electronically of the reason. This is usually because a student does not meet the requirements of the program or that that Host university has too many of their own students who are interested in that particular course.
Successful applicants will be notified as soon as the host campus approval is complete.
